It’s always such a great pleasure to see our own get up and show the world that we too are BOSS! 21 year old David Mbeha did just that when he won TLC’s Next Great Presenter continental competition in November last year. Such a proud moment for the country’s entertainment industry.

In this interview, David talks to us about his plans for the future as well as that proud moment that is now one of our favourite memes on the internet.

Read all about it!

So who is David Mbeha?

David Mbeha is a 21 year old who is passionate about life and the world of Television. Born in a small village called Ngoma in the Zambezi region David moved to windhoek at the age of 10.

I like to label myself as a huge dreamer, someone who is simply fulfilling God’s master plan. – David Mbeha

When did your love for TV start?

Probably when I was in my fourth grade, I remember watching TV host Ilke Platt and just falling in love with Television. I would pretend to host red carpet events and my sister Renathe would always be the guest. It was always something fun to do.

When did you decide that this was what you wanted to do?

When I was 17, I went for my first TV audition for the show Trustco star performers. I was one of two finalists in the category TV presenting . The show made me realise how much I want to be in this industry and made me fight to be in it.

When was your first break?

My first break is definitely winning TLC next great presenter, the presenter search gave me international recognition and so many exciting platforms. The chance to live my dreams.

Talk to us about TLC, the competition and doing the show?

Joining the Discovery networks family under TLC entertainment is a once in a life opportunity, I met so many people who have become a part of my family, from the contestants to my mentor actress Jocelyn Broderick. I remember coming on set each day with so much excitement, I was learning everything from the beginning, so I was like a kid in a candy shop. Everyone was so helpful and I learned so much in such a short period.

Tell us about that moment they called out your name? Because that moment is sort of a meme now…:-D

When my name was called as the winner, I was at first in so much shock. I thought of the promise I had made to my mother in the hospital to pursue my dreams no matter what and that made me very emotional, the fact that she wasn’t in that room to witness that moment, and so the UGLY CRY WAS BORN, LOL.

How has life been since you won?

Ever since I won, I have been quite busy working on a number of exciting projects that am passionate about and also pursuing my honours degree in economics.

Who is your favourite TV Personality? Whose craft do you respect most?

Bonang Matheba, she has created one of the most powerful brands in the african entertainment industry. She is certainly lovely to watch.

What’s your take on being a TV personality as a career in Namibia?

The Namibian television industry is quite small, so its very difficult for upcoming TV presenters who really want to go far in the industry. We need more investors who will believe in the Namibian TV industry and allow those in the industry to create brands for themselves. There is improvement, but a lot of work still has to be done. Especially believing in the power and capabilities of our own people.

What can we look forward to this year, in terms of David Mbeha the brand?

What ever it’s going to be, it will be mind blowing.

Hopes for the future?

A radio career is definitely in the future plan, a talk show or a TV GIG that allows me to travel the world, gosh I love travelling LOL.
