A few weeks ago, I found myself in a creative rut. You know, that frustrating place where even the simplest tasks feel like walking Dune 7 in plakkies. Every idea I had felt like it belonged in the “maybe never again” pile. And no matter how hard I tried to push through, I just ended up staring at my screen like it owed me money. And that’s when I realised something important: I didn’t have to do it all alone.
Asking for help has never been my first instinct. I’ve always been the type to figure things out myself, to sit with a problem until I find a way through.
I’m unlearning that. Slowly.
This time, instead of sitting in my frustration, I am learning to reach out. I am learning to speak to people who have been in my position before. I am learning to share my struggles with those who have more experience in areas I am still figuring out. I am learning to ask for feedback from creatives whose work I admire, people who, in many ways, are better than me at certain things. And instead of feeling inadequate, it brings relief. Because the truth is, being in a room with people who know more than you isn’t intimidating, it’s how you get better.
It’s easy to fall into the trap of thinking we have to figure everything out on our own. But the reality is, growth comes when we allow ourselves to learn from others. Sometimes, it’s okay to admit you don’t have all the answers. Sometimes, reaching out for help is the quickest way to move forward, not a sign of weakness. When you learn from people who have mastered what you’re still trying to figure out, it accelerates your growth.
If you’re an introvert like me, asking for help might never feel completely natural. It might feel uncomfortable, even unnecessary at times. But here’s what I’ve learned:
➔ You don’t have to do it the way everyone else does.
➔ You don’t have to be loud about it.
➔ You don’t have to network in rooms full of strangers if that drains you.
➔ Start small. Ask for feedback over a message.
➔ Reach out to someone whose work you admire and start a conversation.
➔ Learn from people in ways that feel manageable for you. Whether that’s through books, courses, or quiet one-on-one chats.
You don’t have to do everything alone. And you sometimes don’t have to change who you
are to get the support you need. The right people, the ones who genuinely want to see
you grow, will meet you where you are. All you have to do is take that first step.
And that’s a wrap for this edition of The Creative Corner! If you’re considering reaching out for support, remember to take it one step at a time. There’s no rush, your journey is your own, and asking for help along the way can make all the difference. Trust the process, and know that you’re not alone in this.
Until next time, keep creating, learning, and seeking support when you need it!
