Meditation is an activity in which the practitioner just sits and allows the mind to dissolve. It is a simplified activity which can easily be practiced by all. Meditation is not concentration. It is de-concentration – Sri Si Ravi Shankar.

As part of #MonoZenWeek, we asked the founder of Yoga by Beauty and amazing yogi, Beauty Boois to give us a few pointers on meditating.

Find out why it’s important you try it. >>

What is the importance of meditation?

Everybody needs a break from their busy lives and schedules and even from the business of our minds from time to time. A great way to unwind and relax is through meditation. Meditation really enables us to be more present and as such, fosters more awareness. When we have more awareness of our self-talk, thoughts, physical bodily awareness and that of our surroundings we are better able to do away with that which fosters negativity and create space for good vibes, peace and stillness.

Advantages?

Meditation is a natural stress reliever which is great because it’s free and one can access meditation anywhere and at anytime once you’ve learned a technique that works for you. WE all need to establish proper coping mechanisms for stress because if neglected stress can cause many psychosomatic illnesses such as high blood pressure and chronic headaches.

Meditation also helps us to get more quality sleep and helps us to quieten our minds so that we are able to fall asleep more easilty.

How often should one meditate?

I think that it makes sense to meditate every single day, even if just for five to fifteen minutes as we are faced with stressful situations daily.

How does one meditate?

There are various meditation techniques, but the one that works best for me is what I refer to as ‘The Body Scan Practice’ This can be done either sitting up comfortably with a tall spine, shoulders relaxed, preferable on a pillow or blanket, or lying down. Once you’re comfortable, you simply start to pull your minds attention from one body part to the next whilst breathing deeply in and out through the nose. For the first couple of times I would advice that people seek guidance or practice under instruction from a certified yoga or meditation teacher and then once you’ve got the technique down, go solo dolo.
