Stylists, we think, don’t get enough credit. The thought and work that goes into putting together a look for someone else is actually underrated. Today we chat to award-winning stylist, Reinhard Mahalie, who lets us in on that big win and why he does what he does.
Styling huh? How did you get into that?
I always had the keen eye for what looks good and what doesn’t. I was able to find my passion, skills and talent at a very young age. It was clear strength was styling, compared to fashion designing.
Talk to us about your love for fashion? How did that affair start?
It started with the everyday person in town, school, church you name it. Whenever I would see someone looking good I would just stare and really get drawn in. If you were close by, I would always give a compliment. Someone else looking good always excites me till today.

So why not design and make the stuff? Why just style clients?
I always thought I will be renowned fashion designer. But sewing was just never my strongest point. I am really more passionate about styling. I do not think I will want to study for 3-4 years to become a fashion designer. People always confuse me for a fashion designer, especially first time clients. They will go “Boo it’s fine, I also want to look good like your clients; you just do what you do”. As a stylist I explain to them what the role of a stylist is. It’s crucial that we educate our fellow Namibians on the difference between a stylist and designer.
What are your dreams for your brand?
Definitely growth – I want my brand to be a household name on the continent and globally!! Also, one of my biggest dreams for “RM” is to be a luxurious lifestyle brand that caters for every fashionable enthusiast, no matter the age, race, colour, shape or size.

Talk to us about winning ASFA Stylist of the year (Southern Africa) award? How was that like?
To win an award of this magnitude is an exceptional achievement. It made me realise that dreams don’t have deadlines and I was in awe. I feel and believe that this award is well deserved, taking in consideration the amount of hardwork , dedication and sacrifices I had to make as a stylist in Namibia.
What did that mean for your brand?
Tons of exposure, immense pressure to work harder, be more creative and be a visionaire. Apart from my brand, this also paved the way for other emerging stylists to never stop believing in themselves and that no one should interrupt their grinding.
What was your favorite style project ever?
It was the making of my very first Style Portfolio. I was very particular on how I wanted the portfolio to look. I had sleepless nights, I literally annoyed my team, but that comes when you have a certain vision in mind.

Your favorite and go to local designer?
I do not have a favorite fashion designer in Namibia, but I respect all Namibian fashion designers. I had the opportunity to work with Cathy Tshikesho, Damage Designs, Ingo Shanyenge, Simeone Johannes, Dawn Diergaardt, Melisa Poulton, just to name a few. I do not have a go to designer, I go to the designer that is available and gets the job done.
PS: I fully support local designers as it is vital for the growth of our fashion and style industry.

Which were your favorite looks at the NAMAs?
Hands down, TV personality Blue Mbombo. She oozed couture and set the blue carpet on fire.

Please give us 3 pro tips for slaying on the red carpet?
Be confident, know your body and invest in a hairstylist and make-up artist.
What is your favorite and least favorite fashion trend right now?
Favorite trend is Flatforms, a win for the girls who love the height, but hate the heels.
What do you wish to tell people who are thinking of working with you?
To come all the way through, I love to do collaborations.
