We didn’t really see her coming, but when she arrived we were all excited about this new breath of fresh air. A female rapper. Beautiful, fierce and ambitious. One could NOT not notice.
She is gorgeous, stylish and talented. She is Latoya Mwoombola aka Lioness.
Studying medicine, staying fashionable and being a top rapper in the country can’t be easy so we caught up with her and had a little chat.

WORK
So how was your 2017?
My 2017 was an eye opening year. I went through many life exchanging experiences, so i was forced to sit down with myself, connect with God and allow him to work in my life.
Your favourite moment?
My favorite moment was finding out that my sister was engaged.
Your biggest lesson?
My mom and aunt passing away. God had a whole new plan for me.
What are you looking forward to this year?
I am looking forward to finishing school, making more music and experiencing other forms of art such as fashion, photography and cinema.
Talk to us about your life as a med student and a female rapper…
I realize how crazy I am as the years go by. I always ask myself what in the world I was thinking. However, I never compromise on school, it will always come first. Medicine was never a passion of mine, I just enjoy it, in contrast to music.
If I could get a dollar for every time I’m greeted with “hey, how are you? You look exhausted”.
What’s it like in a male dominated industry?
It was trying in the beginning, now I’ve made a name for myself. People have realized that I give them a run for their money. I am as good or better not to be vain. I’ve shown them real music before my femininity so in that regard they address me in that manner.

What is your plan? What happens after you graduate? Will you give up music?
To be honest, I am allowing my fate to take it’s path, either way I will be content, not many have the opportunity to make that choice so I am blessed with this good fortune.
What are your thoughts on the Namibian music scene? What’s lacking, what should we do away with?
Namibia is on the rise, many young adults have great ideas but shying away from originality specifically in the hip hop genre. I know too many artists that sound like artists from abroad. Let us leave poor marketing in 2017, don’t be afraid to seek for help and don’t be afraid to invest in your art.

Jaleel or Gazza

If there’s one thing you have learnt about life and how it works, what would it be?
In as much as you think you are in control, you aren’t the higher power rules you. In my case, God.

Don’t listen to them, they will be background noise and you will bloom, be patient and be kind to yourself.
