Do you believe in new year resolutions? Do you not?

Does it matter?

There’s  been a lot of debate around the issue of waiting for a new year to do things differently, so for this year instead of “resolutions” we are talking  “intentions”.  How will you lead your life this year? What are your 2018 intentions?

We spoke to a few creatives and this is what they had to say:

The overriding intention this year is to

‘lead as you are’.

To me that means honing in on my identity to bring forward art that helps people, art that works and moves in vulnerability and art that stands worthy of respect.

As a writer I want to use this year to create rich and authentic work that unmasks the dreams of black people. There has never been a time more pivotal than the present to create literary documentation, acknowledgement and space for the spectrum of black people that exist in the world.

My year has room for failure, lessons, devastation and rejection because that is life. But it has equal if not more room for good character, courage, growth and success. I want to open myself up to fully experiencing the pleasure and beauty of making and finding answers through unexpected connections. And to always remember that anytime you are working on the personal, you are also in fact, working on the art.

2018 will be an affirmation and manifestation of the idea that, the most beautiful life is the one in which you lead as you are.

My focus this year is money! Making more of it by stepping my freelance game up, but also saving more of it, being smarter with it and paying some debt off. I’m working towards being debt-free by the time I turn 30, so I’ve been learning more about Dave Ramsey’s Debt Snowball Method to help me pay off things like my credit card and my car loan as quickly (and hopefully as painlessly!) as possible.

I also really want to travel this year, so that’s on my vision board too. I’ve been yearning for an island holiday for ages so I think this will be the year I make that dream come true. I’ve already started saving up and while it’s still really early days, I’m excited to be in the position to work towards seeing more of this beautiful world.

And lastly, this is the year I want to live up to one of my favourite Bible verses, 1 Corinthians 16:14:

“Let all that you do be done in love”.

I want to love and be loved. That’s all that matters!

I don’t typically believe in new year resolutions. However, hear me out before you write me off as a pessimist?

We all know about the magical feeling entering a new year, the day when a whole year filled with regrets, broken dreams and forsaken items are left behind guilt free and a time for new, fresh beginnings can be tasted at the tip of your tongue.

I get it.

But somewhere in March, if you’re strong April, your fresh beginnings are long gone and a f*ck it attitude is about to posses you until December where you hate yourself a little (or a lot!) for the things you did and didn’t do, and new years is around the corner so you are given the opportunity to start all over again.

However, even with all this experience, this year, I choose to be an optimist.

One who believes in beginnings in the form of forgiving myself for all the things I haven’t done and giving myself yet another chance to execute.

Hence my theme for 2018: self-care.
Throughout the year.

For myself.

For my finances.

For my business.

For my brand.

That begins with accountability and now that I have held myself accountable I can love myself better to do better.

My intentions in 2018 are to continue to push my limits as an artist/performer.

I will be doing more directing work than the previous years, I currently have two theatre scripts that are commencing production and will both be available for public consumption within the first half of the year. I will also be debuting The Gathering, a bi-monthly show at the FNCC targeted at developing artists through collaboration, it will be audition based and the show will be directed by myself .

Acting wise, I am looking forward to some exciting theatre and movie roles , I feel I have expanded as a performer and I can’t wait to hit the stage and connect with Namibian audiences again . As always I will be in your ears and on your televisions throughout the year, hoping to build a standard of  entertainment that competes with the world market .

All in all 2018 is about growth, devotion and living out my purpose so that when the young African looks at me, they don’t see a man who was boxed in or one dimensional, they see someone challenging themselves because they know they can be anything and everything they want to be.

I’ll also be releasing an album 🙂
