Sean K has made waves on our music scene for the longest time through watching him sing on some of Namibia’s popular stages.  His classy style in music and stunning vocals has earned him rights to becoming one of Namibia’s household names.

Today, he seats with our team and talks about his new album, Status Update, the making of the music video and plans for the rest of the year.

Happy read.

You’ve been at this music thing for a while, when did you decide you were creating an album?

The album was started in 2015 then I had my brain surgery which pushed everything a way back but I am so happy with how it then developed, sound-wise in that time.

Who are your influences and heroes in music?

Prince, Ray Charles, James Brown, Childish Gambino, Aretha Franklin but my family would be the biggest influence. I grew up listening to all the greats. There has always been music in and around my life. I also have a lot of gospel influence. I did sing in the church choir as well.

How long did this album take to make? From concept to final product?

The album took three years to the month to complete. My friend Andrew came to me in February of 2015 and said” Sean, I have a sound for you.” Then we wrote the songs and technically the album was technically supposed to be done in September but then I had brain surgery and that pushed everything back quite a while. The sound did develop so much during that time.

What kind of ‘sound’ were you going for? Who would you compare it to?

I have always been very “old school” in my tastes for music. So I tried to grab a bit of all of those elements and create my own sound.

Was there any overall theme of mood that you were trying to capture with the album?

The album is called “Status Updated” and I named it that because everyone knows how much I love social media and the album is basically a new “post” in my life. That being said, each song has meaning and have been taken from pages of my life and things I say.

What do you want people to get from it?

I really want people to enjoy it. To relate, where they can, to take away what they need and most importantly to create new memories to my music.

Favourite songs and lyrical highlights on the album?

Would it be crazy if I said I love everything? But to be honest my favourite songs are “So Bae, Endless Broken Heart and Turn Up.”

Who was involved?

My friend Andrew Maher, who is the producer. We recorded the album at Groove Studios with Wouter De Bruin, who also mixed and mastered the album.

Talk to us about the music video? What did you want to portray with that?

So this video… Where to start. First of all the song is quite a sad one. It’s about that point in your life where you break up with someone or end a friendship and you are just so heart broken that it feels like it will never be okay again. This is that moment. When you are in your room, crying, eating all the food, dirty, have not showered for days basically just a mess.

So with the video I really wanted it to just be simple, since the song is quite heavy lyrically. I asked my best friend Tulimelila Shityuwete, to join me. I just wanted two faces to convey what the words of the songs are saying. The video was shot and edited by a friend of mine, all the way from Germany, Sarah Binetsch. I hope you guys like it.

Plans for the rest of the year?

I’ll be in Paris to perform with a French band, The Dark Blue Orchestra and other musicians. I will not only be in Paris but will be touring the whole of Europe. Follow my social media pages for the dates.
