Monochrome had the pleasure of getting Wellem Kapenda, an established model to share insights on how life as a model is really like. In-front and behind the camera lens.

How long have you been in the industry?

I have been in the modelling industry for quite some time now but only started taking it seriously in 2016. It honestly has been a journey of emotions, hardship and excitement. My first gig was supposed to be with Maria Nepembe, Dillish Mathews & Chi-Chi for their new single– but Chi Chi got admitted into the hospital so it couldn’t happened that exact weekend and I had to go back to the North. I was still in high school.

How has the journey been so far?

It’s hard. I won’t even lie. I honestly cannot say anything else because it is what it is, HARD.

You recently launched your website? How has the reception been?

My website is doing very well actually, although I am on a break right now. My aim is to reach out to those that have no idea what this industry is about – and they are such a great audience. I love them.

What was the inspiration behind launching a website?

I’ve been receiving a lot of DMs about the modelling industry so I decided to create one platform to answer everyone’s questions before they even ask. There’s a segment called #ASKWELLEM whereby anyone can personally contact me and enquire about modelling.

You speak on industry issues on the site… What are your objectives with the content you are putting out?

I just want people to know the truth bro! We creatives like lying.

What do you appreciate about the industry right now?

It’s growing, and that makes me proud to be part of such an amazing era. What a time to be alive. Being able to see a fashion house collaborate with a phone company in Namibia. I am talking about Deon Angelo and Huawei.

What would you take away?

I want to say the fake love – but where’s the fun in that? I’ll take away the disrespect. The moment we start to respect each other, we will be able to work with one another and create great outcome. All this unnecessary beef is annoying.

Who is WK off duty?

On duty – off duty. I’m just Wellem. I am just that guy. I have a very private life and I only say and show what I want people to know.

How is life as a model in Namibia? What would you advise aspiring models?

There are many answers to this because everyone has their own story and journey to follow. Some have it good, some have it bad. My advice would be – to check out WWK ( wellemkapenda.com ) for everything you want to know about your future modelling career. PS. It’s free.

Talk to us about Pearl Avenue?

Pearl Avenue is the new me.

Plans for your brand?

My head is literally a scrambling book right now. I have so many ideas; I should just sit down and think.
