The MonoTeam had a chance to ask a few questions and here is what Sweetness had to say.

When did you first realize you wanted to pursue a career a fashion designer?

I was in secondary school when my aunt realized that I was creative, she was a dress maker and would always ask me to design something which I would always do in a very creative way. So she said I should become a designer and as years went by when I felt I loved and had the passion for fashion.

What according to you is your favourite part of being a fashion designer?

It’s being able to put your imagination into realization were by you sometimes imagine something which was inspired by almost anything. When sketching out what you have imagined is the exciting part as you look forward in seeing how it would turn out in reality.

How would you describe your personal style?

Afro-chick, I have always loved my African style before it was even an in thing. I would always have newspapers write about me because of the way I would dress. Always with a touch of African, even my hair would be done naturally because I feel like am not proud of myself. Not that I mind people who do weave but I would rather change different African styles.

How do you stay up to date with the latest fashion trends and what inspires your designs?

Television, especially watching style channels as it’s important as a designer to know what’s in style. As you have noticed my work table is in front of my television so that whatever am doing there’s always television playing in front of me.

What is the most successful moment in your fashion career?

Dressing well known people such as Brenda Fassie and Ringo Madlingozi. Also being privileged and honoured for the opportunity accorded to dress and design for the former Namibian First Lady, Mme Penehupifo Pohamba.

Any Fashion tips you advice this winter season?

I recommend long boots, I find them very sexy with some sex appeal, and a long coat would do as they appear to be sexy to me as well. You don’t need to look dull because its winter, you have to look the part all the time.

What advice do you have for upcoming fashion designers in this industry?

My advice that I used to give to my students as I was fashion lecture before I came to Namibia was always, be true to yourself  we are all individual people most especially to designers don’t copy other peoples designs, be unique. Stay true to who you are, the fact that you’re designer’s means that you’re talented.
