The skin is a beautiful thing and the confidence that comes with having healthy skin is exceptionally rewarding. How than will I achieve healthy skin? What products do I use? These are just some of the many questions we end up asking ourselves whenever we want to start the journey of obtaining healthy skin.  Getting the right products is not always easy, you would have to have come across thousands of skin care brands. The sense of achievement when you finally find the right products for your skin and the skin responds to it effectively… JACKPOT!

The Namibian cosmetic industry is rapidly growing and nothing gives one great pleasure than running into a store and seeing that “Made in Namibia” product on the shelf. Namibian people are not new to the use of methods that ensures skin care, for these are methods passed down from generation to generation like the use of red ochre by the Ovahimba people on their skin to protect them from the burning bits of the sun. 28 years down the line the country has seen an increase in the production of skin care products and is undeniably a force to be reckoned with.

We have taken the opportunity to sit with two of the most sought after Namibian skin care brands.

oombeke

oombeke – “A Drop of Magic”; this is without doubt not the first time you hear of this cosmetic product and surely you have heard of the exceptional reviews it has been receiving. Inotila Mwafongwe, the owner of oombeke came up with this cosmetic brand with the inspiration hailing from her grandmother of 104years old. She’s the one who taught her everything she needed to know about this magical fruit.

What’s your take on the skin industry in the country and what are your future hopes for it?

IM: We see a slight change from mass manufactured skin care products towards 100% natural beauty products. I hope that this trend will carry on and that Namibians will go “back to their roots” and prefer their own beauty products, which have worked well for centuries.

Chrisla-Essentials

The wave around this skin care brand is enormous, as almost everyone is talking about it. “The dream is to bring the amazing benefits of essential oils to every home, family, and lifestyle.”  Loide Amadhila, owner and founder of Chrisla-Essentials. Chrisla-Essentials was created to offer 100% natural skin care products made pure essential and carrier oils.

What’s your take on the skin industry in the country and what are your future hopes for it?

LA: It’s mostly dominated by international cosmetic products as cosmetics products made in Namibia are largely under-represented on the shelves of retailers. There is a small quantity of skin care products produced in Namibia and I hope more local products emerge.
