“Changing jobs is one thing, but changing careers is a big step” says Otto Silvanus who has changed careers, from being a professional high school teacher to a logistics and supply chain consultant.

It’s a whole new environment having to shift careers and many people find it very difficult which is why most people are stuck doing jobs that they are not happy with. They are afraid of shifting to a whole new working environment which involves starting all over again and having to master the art of the new job.

Otto says, some career choices are influenced psychologically, children usually don’t have the thinking capacity an adult has, to mount a sophisticated argument with an adult on what choices to make and this tends to have an effect on career choices. The background of one also comes into place as society tends to create deterrence. Deterrence is the action of discouraging an action or event through instilling doubt or fear of the consequences. A child grows up being told that only careers like teaching, nursing and being a doctor should be pursued.

If you look around, you’ll notice that most people are not challenged enough to follow their dream careers. Otto says his career choice of being a teacher was influenced by his parents and during his 4 years as a teacher he realised that he had no passion for it.

It is never too late to change into a new career path, apply for the course you want to study at any University of your choice and you can decide  whether to attend it on a fulltime or on a part time basis. It is advised to not leave your job yet before completing the qualifications. There will be plenty of challenges you’ve have to face but on completion you’ll finally be able to do something that you actually love.

Are you thing of a career change? Why haven’t you done it yet? What are you afraid of?
