I recently saw an Instagram post of a famous chef presenting a perfectly roasted Beef Bone Marrow. Underneath the photo someone commented “Eeew how can you eat that!”  Followed by another chef commenting:  ” If you don’t like Bone Marrow what are you even doing on this page! ” I laughed a bit and decided that if I ever found “Bone Marrows” in a shop I’d try out this recipe. Little did I know that I will be eating this exact same dish two days later!

Arriving in Swakopmund I immediately felt like I’m on holiday, although we rarely spend our holidays at the coast. There is just something about this town that makes me feel relaxed and in holiday mood a.k.a ready to eat! I planned my day ahead and the one place I couldn’t wait to visit was the Brewer and Butcher at the Strand Hotel. The name says it all: Brewer and Butcher the place for good beer and good food!

I was welcomed by the friendly staff and escorted to my table outside, overlooking the calm ocean. I started off with a beer tasting from the in-house brewery. First up was the Helles, a very easy drinking beer, light in colour with a slight pineapple aftertaste. I would recommend this for the 1st time beer drinkers or for someone looking for something a bit sweeter.  The Helles was followed  by the Special Brew which had a strong spicy smell yet a very smooth taste. I can imagine enjoying this beer with a bowl of chicken wings.

The last beer I tasted was by far my favourite, the Märzen slightly less spicier than the Special Brew but very smooth and easy drinking beer. I then had a look at the menu and  couldn’t believe my eyes – Roasted Bone Marrow”!

Yes you read correctly, Bone Marrow on the menu at the restaurant. I immediately  ordered it and to my surprise the recommended beer with this dish is the Märzen- it was a sign that I had to try this! The Roasted Bone Marrow arrived and it was bigger than expected. Served with toasted baguette slices (which they bake in-house) as well as a lemon-parsley  onion and caper salad. The buttery bone marrow and the lemony onions was the perfect balance of fat and acidity. The marrows were cooked to perfection and yes the beer was a superb combo with the Roasted Bone Marrow.

I went to read up a bit about Bone Marrow and I found it that this fatty delicacy is actually very healthy. Packed with minerals that support the immune system it not only fights cancer, it also slows down aging and is very good for your gut health. So next time you see something different on a menu, why not be adventurous and try it?

I would highly recommend this dish the next time you find yourself in my favourite coastal town, Swakopmund.
