’Travel the world and tell everyone’’ – Anke

Dumelang!

I am writing this week’s insert from the sporadically populated Botswana.

I have a gigantic dislike in flying. It is a very weird sensation I experience when I fly. My tummy keeps summersaulting when there is a slight ‘’bump in the air’’ or a bit of turbulence.

I had to catch the early flight Sunday morning, which made me miss church and I try to never miss church because church keeps me grounded. GOD keeps me grounded.

We keep asking God to enlarge our territory and when the opportunity arise, we whine like babies.  No baby, you got to SHOW UP!

This time around, my earthly master needed pleasing so I complied.

Eventually when we got to board (my colleague and I) as we walked towards the plane, it was not the normal Boeing, but a MIDGET of a plane. My nerves were shot. I immediately took something medicinal to calm my nerves. The flight was not as bad as I expected and we arrived without harm and I was so impressed by the airport. See for yourselves.

Having too much luggage, my shuttle driver ran out of the airport building and I was left to fend for myself.  That is where I got annoyed.  He then managed to get other clients who were not part of his pick up and he grabbed the opportunity to make an extra buck and was oblivious to my struggle.  The drive was bumpier than it was supposed to be, he kept driving at full speed and then breaking, almost like a learner driver. Which resulted in me falling around in the bus and having to grab onto my tiny colleague.

We eventually got to the hotel and we were starving and as it was 12pm already, we decided to go look for something to eat.  We headed for an eatery and arrived at a cozy little place. The only other options in the vicinities were fast food chains, which I should avoid at this point of my life.  We ordered and waited more than 30 minutes, and our meals were very basic and the place was not full. I picked up the laid back vibe from the get go in the entire country.

Whilst waiting for our food, we had a guest approach our table. He sat down uninvited and started talking about how he likes our personalities, this coming from someone who met us two minutes ago. He told us a long tale of how he just got from church and how he is struggling and how no one wants to help him. By then, my concentration span failed me and I stopped listening. He then unceremoniously asked for 9 Pula to take a taxi home, my colleague refused and I ignored him.   He seemed dangerous too, his eyes kept jumping from our faces to our purses and phones.  He asked my colleague if she is planning on giving the money, she said no, and he got up and said God Bless You.

He walked away and came back after a while and said, God Hates You!

I was in stitches and laughed and that is when he said – I will klap you wena! I mean, you first bless me and then you unbless me? How can I not find it funny?

The restaurant staff, just stared into nothingness.  Attempting to settle our bill we also waited for more than 5 minutes, there was no sense of urgency.

Later the evening, we went to the hotel restaurant and here comes a guy pulling my colleague to one side in the foyer of the hotel.  I was so baffled and asked her if she knew him, she said they met in the lift, and he flirted with her. So the grabbing was the second meeting they ever encountered.  Unashamedly this guy tells her what his room number is and tells her he will be waiting. I almost fainted right there. AUDACIOUS.

These two experiences in my first 24hrs of being in the country didn’t impress me.

It was also a real challenge to keep to my meals and to my exercise routine, luckily the hotel had a small gym, but I couldn’t get there as many a times as I should due to work commitments.

I tried keeping it very clean most of the time, but it was not the ideal week, and next week is weigh in week.

All in all, I got to meet people from other countries such as Mozambique, Kenya, South Africa and we had loads of fun as much as we worked. I cannot remember when last I laughed so much.

Thank you God, for enlarging my territory.
