We once had her as one of our Top 5 models to watch in 2016 and boy has she proved us right. From big brands, to runway to becoming 2nd Princess (Miss Namibia). We couldn’t be more proud of her growth. This is why she is our Mono Model of the Moment. Varaa Hambira.

We caught up with gorgeous model to see what else she is up to.

Who is Varaa?

Varaa is a supermodel in the making, a future child psychologist and a generally clumsy human being.

When did you know you wanted to take up modelling?

After my first fashion show in 2014. The feedback was great and the creativity and workmanship of Namibian designers impressed me. I knew I wanted to be a part of the fashion industry and modelling seemed the obvious option.

What does modelling mean to you? Why do you love it so much?

I love putting things together. Be it a runway show or a photoshoot. I enjoy being part of making something and seeing the end results. It gives me huge satisfaction knowing I was an instrumental part of a production.

Do you have other career aspirations?

I’m currently a psychology student at UNAM. My ultimate life goal is to become a child psychologist.

How long do you plan to do this for?

I honestly just want to milk this modeling thing for all it’s worth before I hang up my stilletos.  I plan to model for as long as I still find it enjoyable.

Your modelling career has paved so many ways for you in the fashion industry…What are some of the things you would branch into?

I’ve been assisting with styling for the longest time so I’d definitely like to get more into that. I’d also like to branch into show production and model coaching.

You are a model, do you feel you need to be glamourous all the time?

Absolutely not. I feel no such pressure.

What’s your go to off-duty look?

Jeans and brogues.

What do you think about our modelling industry right now?

We have immense talent but the modeling industry lacks a proper structure and opportunities. We are however growing and becoming better despite the challenges.

What do you appreciate?

The support is incredible. Models are super supportive of each other. It’s beautiful.

What would you take away?

The exploitation. Pay us!

Are you signed to any agency? What do you think of those?

No I am not signed to an agency at the moment. Many Namibian agencies are a botch to be honest. They charge models money and don’t get them gigs or training. There are a few that I think are really trying like Ubuntu, Ace and ProModels

2nd Princess

Talk to us about being crowned Miss Namibia 2nd Princess 2016… How was the whole experience?

I enjoyed all of it. I had no idea what I was doing most of the time during the pageant but I had fun doing it. I have enjoyed being the nation’s second Princess. I got to work on projects that mean a lot to me. I also made several appearances in that capacity and had the opportunity to meet amazing people doing incredible things.

What did taking that title mean to you?

The 2nd princess title is not like the Miss Namibia title. You don’t have a set of duties laid out for you to fulfill. Princess titles are what you make of them. You can choose to do nothing with it and nobody will judge you but I saw my title as something I could use to inspire people with and to draw attention to causes I believe needed it.  I chose to embrace it and to allow it to work in my favor.

Message to the current finalists?

Try to learn something from the experience. Make connections with the sponsors, the coaches and the other girls. Remember to have fun.

What can we look forward to (from you) for the rest of the year?

I’ll be modeling in South Africa from June so that should be fun. Wish me luck

If you could, what area of the industry would you contribute to the most?

Model development. There’s so much potential here. The grooming process is really important otherwise models remain basic.

Please give us 3 pro modelling tips?

  • Practice makes perfect. Whether it’s your runway walk or poses in the mirror, keep practicing.
  • Be professional, friendly and helpful at all times. The industry is small, people talk. Nobody wants to hire a diva.
  • Exercise, drink water and eat healthy. Take care of your body, that’s your money maker.
