pursuasive paper topics.

We caught up with one of our favourite fashion and beauty bloggers,  Maurechen Mouton (missmaurechenblog.com). She lets us in on how you can identify or develop your own signature style.

Do you have one? Would you like to? Let’s find out how you can achieve that.

“To me clothing is a form of self-expression-there are hints of who you are in what you wear” – Marc Jacobs.

Fashion wasn’t really my scene; I was sort of all over the place. Going to the stores every other weekend and snatching the first thing I felt would look cute on me (and it never did) or whatever was on sale I would get. When I started my blog last year it allowed me to be more cautious with my impulsive shopping habits. I started shopping smarter, analysing the fabric quality, ensuring that I really needed it and always thought whether I would be able to style it with what’s already in my closet.

If you are eager to know what I did to find my signature style and how I started with a fresh new wardrobe than keep on reading 🙂

  1. Comfort Leads To Confidence

Learn what you feel more comfortable in and most confident too. If it fits good, it looks good. Spend some time in the dressing room and try on a few pieces and figure out if what you are trying on flatters your figure. My thought process when trying on clothes:

  • Does it make me feel comfortable? Am going to have to continuously pull up my pants or pull down my shirt to not expose any certain body parts?
  • Can I style it with several other pieces in my closet?
  • Do I LOVE it or JUST LIKE it?

  1. Chic Inspirations

So if you have no clue on what your personal style is than I would suggest you go onto Instagram and follow some of your favourite celebrities, artists or fashion icons. You might like the way they dress and easily recreate their style. Also, this might come to no surprise to some of you, but Pinterest is such a great tool to find inspiration. Create your own fashion mood board and save those images.

On days where I have no clue what to wear I scroll through my style mood board (find me here) and instantly have an OOTD. Page through fashion magazines if your more old-school, I can guarantee you; you will find something that resonates with YOU.

  1. Build your wardrobe with basic items & style with trendy pieces

Closet Detox. I’d recommend doing this on a weekend and going through your wardrobe piece by piece. Create two piles, one which you are 101% sure of keeping, that fit you right and feel comfortable in and the other pile will be pieces of clothing that you don’t like, are either  too small or that you haven’t worn in the last year and donate it someone who really needs it.

Now I’d suggest slowly (work with your budget) building your wardrobe with staple pieces. If you’re not sure what those are at the end of this article you can find a clothing item checklist that I have put together for you guys. So next time you go shopping this can hopefully help build your wardrobe and gradually add statement pieces to style with all the basic items.

  1. Find Details To Your Style

This has a lot to do with the type of person you are and anything that you are in to. This can be different for everybody and it should be different. So if you are very bubbly you are most likely to wear a lot of colour and prints and If you are someone who is very grounded and chilled than you’ll most likely go for neutral shades or you could be both and have two kinds of style.

For me when I started putting together my wardrobe I realised that I am drawn to tops with a high neck, sweaters with crew necks and denim obviously. I love a good T-shirt and jeans! I can elevate it with a bold lip and add some accessories like a chunky watch, a couple of rings, dainty necklace and voilà!

I would think twice whenever buying anything with stripes and prints on, strappy tops, body-con dresses and all over tight fits. I gravitate towards denim jeans, oversized jackets/sweaters and of course sneakers. For more statement clothing items I have liked bell/flare sleeves, lace detailing and culotte trousers.

  1. Wear It Like You Own It

Now that you have a fresh newly improved wardrobe, put together a few go-to outfits. Done? Add some key pieces like a hat, accessories, but don’t forget LESS IS MORE. When people start to ask you, “Hey, I really like what you’re wearing. Where can I get that?” That’s when you mastered your signature style.

There you have it guys. This process worked for me and I’m sure it’s going to work for you too. Let me know what’s your signature pieces are? I’d really like to know.

Xx
