The Freelancer, as she likes to be called, runs a successful blog Alice and the Hatter that highlights her creative  writing through fashion and lifestyle .

We caught up with the 19 year-old to see how savvy her street style really is. She really pulled all the stops and made our streets scream for more stop signs.

Charene answered a few questions on all things  style inspo and more.

  • Wardrobe essentials

Heels, always in, all ways. I’m also the captain of the skirt train, so I believe having an array of versatile (mini, a-line, circle, maxi) skirts is essential. And finally an assortment of cute structured purses – a girl has got to have options.

  • Travel destination for style inspo

I’m torn between London and Morocco. London for its notorious shameless style and for pretty much showing the finger to trends. Morocco for the tassel details, the cool linen and those fabulous loafers in every shape and colour.

  • Best style tip

It’s all in the details. Having neat nails and shaved legs goes a long way. And making sure all loose threads are snipped and stains be- gone is also a must. It subtly affects the outfit without a doubt.

  • Shopping tip

Always wear nude undies! In the fitting room, it just helps to envision the pieces without a distracting pink bra. I also believe a sale is worth your time. Yes, it’s a schlepp to go through all that unwanted junk to find a gem, but it’s a schlepp you won’t regret.

  • Latest purchase

My favourite new purchase is the cobalt blue miniskirt I got on sale.

  • Must try trend right now

Mustard everything for fall!

  • Go-to fashion statement.

Such a cliché, but confidence. And a little red lippie never hurt nobody!

  • Favorite shopping spots

I have a deep-seeded love for Woolies. Quality timeless pieces for the win! Whenever I go to South Africa, Zara captivates both my heart and my credit card. And anyplace thrift or vintage.

  • A fact no one knows about you

I’m pretty handy with a sewing machine. Whenever I see something in store that is either out of my price range or would simply do better in another colour, I try to recreate the patterns. My mum and sister are also both fabric hoarders so I often get the task of stitching up something for them.

  • A fashion hack

Putting a key-ring in your jeans’ zipper, then popping it over the button before you fasten it. It keeps that zipper up real snug. Oh and for my fellow red-wine lovers out there, soaking a stained item in white wine overnight pulls the red pigment right out.
