We are 20 days into the year but some of us may still not have started the year. Whatever the reason, you can still start it right.

Time is a social construct anyway, right?

To help us with that, transformational speaker and trainer, Sepiso Mwange shares 5 ways you can start the year on a high note.

It’s a new decade, yay! It’s also a new year which means the air is full of promise, fresh starts, changes and you are probably filled with an “I can do anything” spirit. Great! I feel it too and with that said, I’d like to share with you my five tips to not only start the year on a high note, but make sure it stays that way.

  1. Mindset – actively decide that this is going to be a good year no matter what. January will pass and soon you will feel the aches and pains of the months as they go by and you will need a positive and productive mindset to get you through. Now actively deciding means that you choose to be in a positive state of mind. And this can be tricky especially when you don’t feel positive or feel like being positive, but think it first and the emotions will follow.

  1. Timing – the year has 12, TWELVE months in it so, relax! If you have long term goals, break them up into smaller, short term goals that can help you achieve the ‘bigger picture’. A lot of goals are not reached because we look at them and think “there is no way I can keep this up for 12 months”. Think of it this way, you can’t eat a cake whole. So enjoy every little piece of the cake until it’s all done.

  1. Receipts – write or jot down things that make you smile, feel good, inspire and motivate you, things you want to do, hopes, dreams, secret fantasies. Why? Well 1, you are creating a treasure chest of words or stories that can help build and carry you through those rough days and 2, writing down things is the first step to making them real.

  1. Forgiveness – forgive yourself for all the goals and New Year’s resolutions you didn’t reach last year. It’s ok. It is ok. I doubt the ‘resolution gods’ are looking down at you and planning a fitting punishment for you. Go back to the drawing board, see what went wrong and how you can position yourself to be able to achieve those goals or resolutions this year. And hey, if you those don’t seem appealing or interesting anymore, let them go. Dead weight is not attractive on anyone.

  1. Make it count – cliché, but true. Be grateful for everything in your life that you have and don’t have. You have 300 and some odd days and you decide what they look like. Make sure that on the 365th day you can look back and be proud of what you did with the 364 days!

That’s my list. I would love to hear what your (five) tips are. Thoughts, comments and coffee meetings are more than welcome! You can reach me via Facebook and Instagram at @sepisomwange.
