Opportunities for all.

-Shallot Mohutege

In 2018 we leave no room for discrimination against women and/or the LGBTQ community. Back in the days it was hard to see women holding powerful positions, men were regarded as the fairer sex,  the providers of the family so they could get any kind of job they wanted to. From office work to getting their hands dirty in the field. Women on the other hand were seen as weak and were restricted to do certain types of work. They had one job and one job only, to be housewives and raise kids. Heck! Back then they weren’t even allowed to be educated *deep sigh

However, over the past couple of years, women have evolved immensely. It took a very long time but the world and how it’s set up is coming around. At first, women could only do work such as being a clerk or secretary, basically anything that involved working under a man. But not anymore. Women are now seen holding high positions such as being managers, being big business women or even CEOs of big companies. Women have finally left the shadows of men and have started doing their own thing whether society likes it or not. While we still fight for women’s rights in the middle east and other countries, we can still acknowledge the growth and difference.

Same thing with the LGBTQ community. In the past people were not so welcoming of people from this community, in fact people still face harassment and discrimination at the workplace because of their sexual orientation. What have Namibian companies done to promote diversity at the workplace, have they developed anti-harassment and anti-discrimination policies that address homophobia?

Needless to say, discrimination against women or the LGBTQ community is, in its self a violation of the constitution which is a crime. Men are also, in their own way, no strangers to discrimination. They too get discriminated against for their race, and sometimes even for their education or lack thereof.

There should be equal opportunities and equal treatment for all employees and no one should lose out on a job just because of their gender or sexual preference not should they earn any less than their colleagues. At the end of the day, these people are humans to and deserve to be treated no less then.

“A company that employs a diverse workforce can draw strength from the variety of talent and different perspectives employees bring to their jobs. Diversity can also improve an organization’s level of adaptability, strengthen its ability to provide service to diverse audiences, and ultimately inspire employees to think beyond their own realities and push their boundaries.”(Monster)

People should learn to speak out and report any discrimination or unfair treatment at work. Make your voice be heard.  Remember that If you don’t speak out, the situation you are in will never change.

We live in 2018!
